BorderTrails – The Project
GrenzRouten (BorderTrails) are a well-established hiking network in the German-Dutch-Belgian border area around the city of Aachen and the municipalities of Kelmis, Plombières, Raeren and Vaals. The BorderTrails were established as part of the Euregionale 2008.
The BorderTrails consist of eight signposted circular routes, equipped with information and orientation panels. They cover a total distance of 120 kilometres. They form essential cross-border connecting routes and provide the basic framework for the hiking node networks that have developed in the German-Belgian-Dutch border region.
The long-term objective of GrenzRouten is to facilitate cross-border hiking and to raise awareness of the history of the border, which comes alive vividly along the routes. In this context, the website grenzrouten.eu is intended to serve as a central platform. In addition to the GrenzRouten themselves, the website presents other opportunities for cross-border hiking, as well as providing information on signposted hiking route networks in the tri-border-region and the relevant tourism organisations.
This revised and new edition of GrenzRouten in 2026 continues with the same objective. This project was implemented through cross-border cooperation between all partners and was made possible with funding from the Small Project Fund “People to People” of Interreg Meuse-Rhine (NL-BE-DE), an EU fund dedicated to cross-border cooperation.
