  • Cathedral City and Forest Hiking

Some say what makes Aachen special is its location at the Three-Country area of Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. Others believe it’s the beautiful Old Town or Aachen Cathedral that draws the city’s many visitors. We say it’s all of these things together—and much more.

Discover the region’s history at the Centre Charlemagne and take a stroll along scenic trails from the city center into the boundless Aachen Forest.

Maison du Tourisme du Pays de Herve

  • Hedge Country and Gourmet Country

Enjoy magnificent views in the Herve Country, the “superbe région de bocage” (beautiful region of rolling countryside). The characteristic hedgerows once served to demarcate pastures and plots of land. After a period of neglect, people are now rediscovering the ecological and scenic value of these hedgerows as a defining feature of the Herve cultural landscape.

The former pasture orchards, where livestock grazed in the shade of the trees, have largely been transformed into low-stemmed fruit orchards. In addition to the famous Herve syrup—a natural product made without added sugar—fruit, juices, and cider complement the product range on offer. On “Gourmet Saturdays,” regional producers in Aubel, Hombourg, and Herve invite visitors to tour their facilities and sample cheese, beer, syrup and cider. On Sundays the traditional weekly market in Aubel draws in the crowds.

Visit Zuid-Limburg

  • Dutch Tuscany

Whether it’s called Mergel Country, Heuvel Country, Hill Country, or Chalkboard, there are many terms for the gently rolling landscape that stretches from the west of Aachen to Maastricht. In the former chalk sea that covered this area millions of years ago, “Dutch Switzerland” awaits visitors with the country’s highest peaks, idyllic villages, and historic isolated farmsteads and castles.

Culinary delights beckon to take a break, in keeping with the “Burgundian way of life”, so celebrated in Limburg. The offerings range from flatbread to specialty coffees, cheese, syrup, and homemade ice cream, all the way to wine tastings. Dutch wine? That’s right—on the “Route de Vins Vijlen-Holset,” we pass a winery that has been producing internationally acclaimed wines using organic farming methods on 28 hectares since 1988. And if you squint just a little, the sight of the slender row of poplars on the opposite hillside might make you feel, just for a moment, as if you were in Tuscany.
